In the first sample for Isaiah chapter 56, the Lord makes several connections to the 56th book of the Bible with the qualities of a good overseer.

  • Capable of warning others of dangers in this present world.
  • Holy, not filthy dogs.
  • Not greedy for self-gain, lucre.
  • Not self-willed.
  • Sober, not given to wine.

ISAIAH 56:10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.
11 Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter (territory).
12 Come ye, say they, I will FETCH WINE, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.

TITUS 1:5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
7 for a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God: not selfwilled, not soon angry, NOT GIVEN TO WINE, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers…
11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s (vile gain) sake.

ISAIAH 56:11 and Titus 1:11 are connected with (gain, lucre).

These connections are also continued in Titus 2:2,3 with the aged men and aged women able to teach and watch out for the younger.

In the second sample, the Lord makes a connection with the first and second coming of Christ and the need of people to do right.

  • Isaiah: Do right, the Christ is coming soon!
  • Titus: Do right, because Christ is coming again!

ISAIAH 56:1 Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.

TITUS 2:12 Teaching us that… we should live soberly, righteously, and godly
13 Looking for… the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
